The Thompson Central Park, New York
A Manhattan address can’t get much better than The Thompson Central Park. Step outside and walk a few blocks and you’ll eye the iconic Columbus Circle, and in the other direction, Broadway. Cross the street and you’ll find the south end of Central Park, where horses and carriages queue. It is literally only a few steps from Fifth Avenue’s medley of shops – think Prada, Bergdorf Goodman and Tiffany & Co, to name a few. Taxis stand ready and waiting to whisk you around town, and public transport options are plentiful (nine subway lines within a walk of 10 minutes or less).
The Thompson feels like it should be a stuffy hotel sitting among the coolness of downtown, but it's far from it. The staff are accommodating and friendly, so don't expect any pretence. There are plenty of perks here - from the 24-hour fitness centre to The Thompson’s own resident speakeasy and restaurant “Burger Joint”. The hotel recently opened in 2021, so I expect they will be adding a further array of other choices here over the next year. After my recent stay at The Thompson West Hollywood, I was very excited to try the brand’s swanky new Big Apple branch.
The Room
The rooms are decently sized—particularly for this part of town—and have a simple décor free of clutter. All come with a desk, walk-in showers stocked with the classic Thompson bath amenities, and a fluffy all-white bed, as well as high ceilings and tall windows. Complimentary soft mini-bar items like peanuts and your favourite bevies get replenished daily; alcohol, which includes beer from local brands like Bronx Brewery. Not all rooms have notable views, but those on the higher floors look up at Billionaires Row, and down onto the leafy oasis of Central Park.
The chic minimalist rooms have a lux feel with walnut-style wood furniture accented by golden brass. Forest green, mustard and teal furnishings add contrast to the moody tones. All rooms include blackout curtains and are sound proof; bathrooms all fitted with Brooklyn based D.S. & Durga amenities.
Breakfast
Breakfast is also a delight; the French Toast is one of the best I’ve ever had - other options include the egg white omelette with feta and spinach, Jewish black seed bagels, pancakes, cold-pressed juice, and coffee or tea. This is all best-enjoyed in bed - and if you’re hungover (like I was both mornings), it’s even more of a treat.
