Palihotel, San Francisco
Palihotel San Francisco, just a stone throw away from Union Square and within walking distance to the best of the South of Market neighborhood and Financial District, is a reincarnation of a century-old, Mission and Spanish Revival-style structure on Stockton Street that has been home to several historic properties since its development, including the Colonial Hotel in the 1920s, the Hotel Navarre in the 1930s, the Navarre Guest House in the 1950s and most recently, the Mystic Hotel. For all the pet-lovers out there, wannabe guests with four legs are very welcome at the sunny Pali.
It is a classic city-charmer, with Victorian architecture, a modern outlook and a hard-to-beat location in the thick of things. Interior-wise, rooms sport an upbeat, Cali-style colour scheme with the accents to match. The Smeg fridges, Nespresso machines and unique furniture all adds to the flair, making this a very swish property. The staff are laid-back and attentive, and the sociable second-floor restaurant Fisher Loft keeps guests happy, fed and watered. There's no gym on site, but Palihouse has partnerships with local venues so your workout regime won't be put on hold.
There’s Fishers Loft restaurant on site, but you’ve also no shortage of eateries on your doorstep, within an easy walk to Union Square. Breakfasts, though, are not to be missed: Pancakes and avocado toast, anyone?
The property has been reimagined by Brosh and his team into an urban haven that fuses old and new seamlessly. While the property’s historic patina and details are still prevalent, it has been layered with a contemporary, California-centric sensibility highlighted by Palisociety’s irreverent approach to hotels. Work by local artists and photographers lines the walls, vintage pieces dot the halls, and fully equipped bedrooms mean you never really need leave.
There are 82 rooms, spanning an array of 150 to 400 square feet. Each room comes fully equipped with Pali signature bathroom amenities and an in-room tablet with a curated neighbourhood guide.
The Palihotel is a cool new addition to the San Francisco hotel scene. I liked the quirky décor, the in-room amenities, and especially that bed. In most central San Francisco locations, you have to consider the state of the area - as another hotel contender we considered was right off the Tenderloin district, with a scary abundance of homeless people milling about outside. Pali has none of that, and it’s definitely a firm favourite - and will definitely be staying here again when I’m next in San Francisco.
Thank you to Eavie and the PaliSociety team for our lovely stay x
